Whether you are hiking the Rogue River Trail, looking for a private spot to Fly Fish or visiting Grants Pass for the annual Boatnik celebration, the Doubletree Ranch offers cabin rentals and secluded peace and quiet in a beautiful setting along the Rogue River.
Doubletree Ranch is located within the wild and scenic section of the legendary Rogue River and preserves nearly a mile of private river frontage. It remains as wild and beautiful as when it was homesteaded in 1891. Its rugged beauty has been featured in several movies; "Spirit of the Eagle" and "Grizzly Mountain" starring Dan Haggarty and "Dead Man" starring Johnny Depp.
The ranch is ten minutes from Merlin and twenty minutes from Grants Pass where many river centered activities originate. It is within easy driving distance of Crater Lake National Park, The Oregon Shakespearean Festival in Ashland, Oregon Caves National Monument and Jacksonville National Historic Landmark. You can explore miles of Oregon countryside while comfortably housed in one of our cabins. The 160 acre ranch offers walking trails, bird and wildlife watching, excellent bank fishing and perfect peace and quiet. For four generations it has been our family home, come enjoy it with us!
We are open seasonally, April 1 through October 31.
All are set up for cooking with pots and pans, dishes, flatware and gadgets. Each has a microwave and toaster. The small cabins have under counter refrigerators; the houses have full size refrigerators. We made sure you have ground coffee to go with your coffee maker. All cabins have gas barbeques. Linens and towels are provided. Decks and screen porches have comfortable outdoor furniture and we keep a selection of beach chairs at the river. Our laundry cabin, which we call Sudsy Pup, has a washer/dryer for guest use and is full of any supplies that you may require. There is a land line phone for local calls. We do not provide housekeeping except if requested for longer stays.
Throughout the cabins and houses we have furniture with lots of family history and memories. There are quilts on the beds and nice touches about. We have many books from which to choose, assorted games and excellent wifi. There are ceiling fans in most rooms and air conditioning in all buildings. We have tried to create the comfortable places that we would love to find if we were traveling.
As the ranch occupies 160 riverfront acres, there is access for bank fishing and many maintained walking trails. There are local opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. Kayaks and rafts can be rented in Merlin and there are two companies that provide a selection of guided trips for half day or all day enjoyment of the river.
Named for Tyler Stillwater where we love to sit and watch the river and the world go by. Mary Tyler homesteaded this property in 1891. She was a traveling nurse who rode a horse to visit her many patients around Josephine County.
Growing up, Kit and Dana had many ponies and horses but the favorite was Mr. Chips, an ornery little Shetland who wandered free around the ranch. In his later years (and he lived to be very, very old) he was affectionately known as Boney Pony. Shetland cabin is a tribute to favorite ponies everywhere that raised children on their backs.
Built by Rick's grandfather, this two bedroom house has a delightful garden with a grape arbor.
This house was originally a barn and sometimes, late at night, we think we can still hear the horses snorting and stomping.
Rick's great grandfather built Meadow House in 1932. As there was no electricity, he used a hammer and hand saw. For the fireplace, he hauled rock and sand from the river with help from an old white mule. When we began offering this house as a rental in 2009, Laura Bush was one of our first guests.
At normal water level, the house and original barn sat some ninety feet above the river and seven hundred feet away from it. During the 1964 flood, the barn was swept away and Rick's grandmother thought the house would be next. It survived. Our children, Kit and Dana, grew up in this wonderful house with a rotating cast of dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rats and even a pet possum or two.

From Interstate 5 Take the Merlin exit (#61). Head toward Merlin on Merlin-Galice Road. Go though the little town of Merlin, about 4 miles from the freeway exit. A half mile out of Merlin (still on Merlin Galice Road) you will see Romar's Sports Bar on the left. Just beyond, Azalea Drive comes in from the left. Turn left on Azalea Drive and immediately turn right on Abegg Road. Come all the way to the end of the road, about 3.5 miles and you have found us!
If you are coming from the coast (199 -Redwood Highway), it is best to head through Grants Pass, get on I-5 and follow these same directions. It is just as fast and much easier than trying to come in the back way.
Please don't follow Mapquest or Google Maps directions as they will try to take you on a road that no longer exists. The map below is provided for reference.
